The Hair Loss and the Regrowth Cycle

The Hair Loss and the Regrowth Cycle

Did you know that human hair grows and falls out in a continuous cyclic pattern? It is important to understand the normal hair growth cycle to understand why hair loss occurs. Understanding the stages of your natural hair cycle can help solve common hair issues you may encounter and help to boost hair growth!

The cycle consists of three stages: Anagen (the growth phase), Catagen (the transitional phase) and Telogen (the resting phase). In this article we will talk about the three stages in depth and why they occur.

The Anagen Stage

What is the Anagen Phase?

The Anagen stage is commonly referred to as the ‘Growth Phase’ or ‘Active Phase’. This is because in the Anagen Phase the cells in the root of your hair are rapidly dividing and so more new hair is formed.

How much does your hair grow?

Throughout the Anagen Phase, your hair grows around half an inch a month (around six inches a year). It is also faster in the summer than in winter!

How long does the Anagen Stage last?

The average phase of the Hair Growth Cycle lasts an average of 3-5 years! So, a full-length hair growth averaging 18 to 30 inches. The Anagen Phase is also generally longer in people of Asian descent and can last as long 7 years — meaning your hair has the potential to grow up to 3 feet long!

The Catagen Stage

What is the Catagen Phase?

After the Anagen phase, your hair cycle enters a short transitional phase also known as ‘the Catagen phase’. The Catagen phase signals the end of active hair regrowth and cuts individual hairs off from the blood supply that reproduce new hair.

How long does the Catagen Stage last?

The Catagen phase lasts roughly around 10 days.

The Telogen Stage

What is the Telogen Phase?

The final stage of your natural hair growth cycle is called ‘the Telogen Phase’. This is a resting period when strands remain in their follicles but are not actively growing. An estimate of 10-15% of your hairs are in the Telogen Phase at any given moment and around 25 to 100 Telogen hairs are shed normally each day.

The Telogen phase can last anywhere from 3 months to 100 days.

After the Telogen stage, your hair will return to the Anagen stage. As new hair grows in the Anagen stage the old hair will be pushed out, now the whole process will begin again!

Do You Experience Hair Loss or Hair Shedding?

As mentioned above, hair shedding is completely normal as you can lose 50 to 100 hairs per day. But if you lose more hairs per day than this, it can be a medical condition known as ‘telogen effluvium’. This is typically brought on by experiencing a traumatic event such or by also experiencing high stress (losing a job, going through a divorce, being in an accident), undergoing an operation, or recovering from a bad illness.

Besides speaking to a medical professional and following their advice, we also recommend regularly applying hair oil to your scalp and hair length in order to trigger regrowth and prevent further hair loss. Hairssential hair oil incorporates a large variety of different (essential) oils sourced from all over the world in order to stimulate regrowth and nourish both your scalp and hair. Hairssential’s hair oil is the perfect bottle of self-care, especially for those suffering from hair loss.
